Dubai is embarking on a monumental project to construct a $35 billion airport terminal that is poised to become the world’s largest upon completion, announced the emirate’s ruler.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Prime Minister and Vice President of Dubai, revealed on Sunday the ambitious plans for the new terminal, which is slated to be five times the size of the existing Dubai International Airport and capable of accommodating up to 260 million passengers annually.

Sheikh Mohammed outlined that all operations at Dubai International Airport will gradually transition to the newer Al Maktoum International Airport in the coming years.

Sheikh Mohammed remarked: “As we build an entire city around the airport in Dubai South, demand for housing for a million people will follow. It will host the world’s leading companies in the logistics and air transport sectors.”

He emphasized the project’s significance for future generations, ensuring sustained and robust development for forthcoming inhabitants. Sheikh Mohammed envisioned Dubai as not only a global airport but also a port, urban hub, and new global center.

Al Maktoum International Airport, inaugurated in 2010, will serve as the new home for flagship carrier Emirates upon completion of the expansion.

The airport will boast five parallel runways and 400 aircraft gates.

Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports, hailed the development as a testament to Dubai’s status as a premier aviation hub. “The growth of Dubai has always been hand in hand with the growth of its aviation infrastructure, and today we see another bold step on that journey,” stated Griffiths.

Dubai International Airport has maintained its status as the world’s busiest airport for international travel for a decade, placing immense pressure on its capacity. Despite challenges posed by the pandemic, the airport welcomed nearly 87 million passengers last year, surpassing pre-pandemic levels.
