Edinburgh Airport has enhanced its winter operations with the addition of two new compact jet sweepers (CJS) from specialist manufacturer Aebi Schmidt, replacing older equipment and strengthening the airport’s snow and ice clearance capabilities.

The investment marks the latest upgrade to Scotland’s busiest airport’s winter resilience fleet, with the new CJS vehicles joining two ASP 24-metre de-icers—also supplied by Aebi Schmidt—which were introduced two years ago.

The compact jet sweepers, which replace equipment dating back to 2010, are designed for enhanced manoeuvrability and performance on taxiways and aircraft stands, enabling quicker and more efficient snow clearance in challenging winter conditions.

Andrew Glasgow, Airside Operations Resilience Manager at Edinburgh Airport, led the procurement process and highlighted the importance of operational flexibility:

“Winter weather and its potential impact is one of the main areas of our resilience planning, and it’s essential that we have equipment that can help us both prepare for and combat any issues.

“The compact nature of the CJS and its manoeuvrability make it ideal for taxiways and stands, and it complements the existing equipment in our fleet.”

Glasgow also praised Aebi Schmidt’s IntelliOPS winter service platform, which offers greater oversight of de-icing operations and resource planning, improving the airport’s readiness during extreme weather.

In addition to equipment performance, the airport cited Aebi Schmidt’s technical support and customer service as key factors in its continued partnership.

“We have a good relationship with Aebi Schmidt, and their valued technical advice has helped ensure we’re investing in the right tools for the job,” Glasgow added.

David Harvey, Airport Sales Manager at Aebi Schmidt, welcomed the airport’s decision to extend its fleet with the new sweepers and said the company was “proud to support Edinburgh Airport in its commitment to safety and operational efficiency throughout the winter season.”
