Harry Reid International Airport has made a significant leap in emergency preparedness with the introduction of two new state-of-the-art aircraft rescue and firefighting (ARFF) trucks.
This investment was made possible by $3mn in federal grant funding through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and Airport Infrastructure Grant programme.
The new ARFF trucks are equipped with impressive features, including 4,500-gallon water tanks — an increase of 1,500 gallons compared to previous models.
They also boast advanced thermal imaging technology that allows firefighters to locate both fires and individuals in low-visibility conditions.
Additionally, the trucks come with a 65-foot high-reach extendable turret, providing flexibility and precision in tackling emergencies involving large aircraft.
Emphasising environmental responsibility, the new fleet is outfitted with fluorine-free foam (F3), which aligns with FAA guidelines and mitigates PFAS contamination risks.
Rosemary Vassiliadis, Clark County’s director of aviation, said: “These new ARFF trucks raise the bar for safety on the airfield.
“They are equipped with the latest technology and ensure that we can respond more quickly and efficiently during the most critical moments.”
This upgrade replaces aging equipment and promises quicker, more effective responses to aviation emergencies.
The unveiling took place at Clark County Fire Station 13, located on the airfield, and featured remarks from notable figures, including US senator Jacky Rosen.
Rosen said: “Harry Reid International is the beating heart of Nevada’s travel and tourism economy.
“When visitors fly into Las Vegas — whether it’s for fun or for business — they expect and deserve nothing less than a safe and secure experience.
“I am so proud to announce yet another new critical investment in the safety of the airport, its passengers, and its infrastructure with the arrival of brand-new aircraft rescue and firefighting vehicles.”
With these enhancements, the airport said it is set to significantly improve safety for both travellers and staff alike, ensuring a secure experience at one of the busiest airports in the nation.
