The Kenyan government has reaffirmed plans to modernise aviation infrastructure in the country following the signing of a new agreement to upgrade and expand Maasai Mara Airport.
The Intergovernmental Partnership Agreement, signed between the Ministry of Roads and Transport and the Narok County Government, is expected to strengthen air connectivity to the Maasai Mara, one of Africa’s best-known wildlife and tourism destinations.
Under the project, Maasai Mara Airport will undergo significant infrastructure improvements, including the construction of a 1.5km runway, two taxiways, a new terminal building, perimeter fencing and additional support facilities designed to improve operational efficiency, safety and passenger services.
Officials said the development would support both commercial and charter flight operations while improving access to the wider Maasai Mara ecosystem for tourists, businesses and local communities.
The agreement also outlines funding arrangements, implementation timelines and regulatory compliance measures. Kenyan authorities said the framework had been reviewed and approved by the Office of the Attorney General.
Environmental protection measures and community engagement initiatives have also been incorporated into the project to ensure local participation throughout the airport’s development.
Once completed, the upgraded airport is expected to improve the movement of passengers and cargo, support tourism growth and create new employment opportunities in Narok County and surrounding areas.
The project forms part of Kenya’s wider strategy to strengthen regional aviation infrastructure and improve connectivity to key economic and tourism hubs.
The signing ceremony was attended by Kenya Airports Authority Managing Director Moses Wekesa, Principal Secretary for Aviation and Aerospace Development Teresia Mbaika, and Narok Governor Patrick Ole Ntutu.
