A virtual air traffic control tower has been installed at Vigo–Peinador Airport in Spain, rendering it the first in the country to transition to fully digital operations.
With its 360° real-time visual display, the tower is capable of replacing a traditional out-the-window view through the use of advanced camera and sensor technology.
The new operations center, which is situated in a building adjacent to the airport, is equipped with fixed and mobile HD camera and real-time sensor data.
It will initially go into operation during low-traffic hours as part of a phased approach.
The tower was delivered by Searidge Technologies, a company specialising in AI-powered solutions for aviation, in partnership with Skyway, a digital infrastructure service provider.
Last month, the first digital tower to be certified in the Middle East was installed by Searidge at Hamad International Airport.
The company has also launched the technology at major hubs such as Hong Kong, Heathrow, Changi and Dubai.
Moodie Cheikh, CEO of Searidge Technologies, said: “We’re proud to support Aena in achieving this important milestone.”
“The operational launch at Vigo marks a first for Spain and underscores Europe’s leadership in digital tower innovation.
“We look forward to continuing our collaboration as Aena advances its strategy to digitise and future-proof airport operations across the country.”
