Ground handling firm Swissport has secured a new contract with China Eastern Airlines at Melbourne Airport, strengthening operational links between Australia and China.

Under the agreement, Swissport will provide a full suite of services, including passenger handling, ramp operations, cargo services and aircraft cleaning, supporting China Eastern’s growing international network.

The partnership builds on existing cooperation between the two companies in Shanghai Pudong International Airport, one of the Asia-Pacific region’s busiest cargo hubs.

Brad Moore, Swissport’s chief executive for Asia-Pacific, said the deal highlighted the company’s ability to deliver integrated ground handling services across multiple locations.

He added that the collaboration had enabled the development of a tailored service model for Chinese carriers, with a strong emphasis on safety and standardised procedures.

Focus on cargo and cold-chain handling

The agreement is expected to enhance cargo operations on the Shanghai–Melbourne corridor, a key route for trade between the two countries.

Shanghai Pudong handled around four million tonnes of cargo in 2025, while China Eastern transports approximately 19,500 tonnes annually on the route.

Melbourne is a major export gateway for Australian goods, including fresh produce, seafood and pharmaceuticals, while also supporting growing imports driven by e-commerce demand.

Swissport said its Melbourne cargo facility includes specialised cold-chain infrastructure and pharmaceutical handling capabilities, designed to support temperature-sensitive and high-value shipments.

Network growth and operational readiness

China Eastern operates up to 14 weekly flights between Shanghai and Melbourne during the low season, increasing to 17 during peak periods. Additional services link Melbourne with Nanjing Lukou International Airport and Xi’an Xianyang International Airport.

To support the launch, Swissport staff in Melbourne underwent training at China Eastern’s Shanghai headquarters, covering operational systems, safety procedures and service standards.

Expansion of aircraft turnaround services

The agreement also marks the rollout of Swissport’s “Cabin Care” service in Melbourne, following its earlier introduction at Sydney Airport.

The service combines cabin cleaning with broader ground handling operations, using cross-trained staff to improve coordination and reduce aircraft turnaround times.

Wider Asia-Pacific growth

Swissport said the deal forms part of its broader expansion strategy in the Asia-Pacific region, including its involvement in a digital cargo terminal project at Shanghai Pudong.

The company operates at more than 300 airports worldwide and said the Melbourne contract would support further growth in China Eastern’s network, as demand for integrated ground handling and air cargo services continues to rise.
